Lima’s Safest Neighborhoods

A recent survey just released by the civic group Ciudad Nuestra asked residents of Lima if they had been the victim of a crime in the past year.
21% of Limas population responded saying that they had. Breaking down the crime figures by area the worst regions were Villa El Salvadoe at 27.5%.
If you live to the South of Lima in the less densely populated area of Lurin then only 9.6% of the residence had been the victim of crime. Some of the safer neighbourhoods are Miraflores at 15.3% and San Isidro at 17.3%. According to respondents, pocket-picking and bag-snatching are by-far the most common crimes in Lima, followed by burglary. There was also a feel good factor expressed by the residence living in the lower crime areas. People generally felt more secure than their counterparts living
in other areas.

It is important to put these figures into perspective. Lima has a population of approximately 8.5 million in the metropolitan area and a population density of
about 3000 inhabitants per square kilometre. It’s also important to understand the definitions of crime. For example, a burglary doesn’t just mean that someone’s home has been broken into; it also includes empty houses and garages.

To Stay Safe in Lima.

Rent a secure apartment such as ours in a safe area. Our rental apartment has a front reception desk and 24hr security.
San Isidro and Miraflores are good areas and you are centrally located for most of the tourist attractions in Lima.
Do not flaunt your valuables (phones, jewellery, cameras, watches etc). Use a licensed taxi to get you around ideally booked from the reception of your apartment.
Of course what may be obvious to some do not walk the streets at night alone.

The safest and best method to get from Lima airport would be to pre-arrange a taxi with your hotel or booking agent. If you book our Miraflores apartment then we can book your airport pickup with a repuatble local taxi firm. When your flight arrives, it will take you 30 to 45 minutes to go through immigration and customs, pick up your luggage and exit the airport. There are not as many Taxi drivers hassling you in the airport now as access is restricted. Ideally have someone wait for you with a sign with your name on it.

Lima now requires all taxis to be licensed to try and prevent illegal taxis. Although, this hasn’t prevented them from printing fake signs and licenses. From this point of view Lima is no different to any other city in the world.

If you can speak Spanish then hailing a non official taxi at the airport is not normally an issue if you follow a few simple rules. First, always agree on the fare in advance. Don’t pay much more than $50 (Average $25 -$30) for a taxi to take you from the airport to Miraflores. Don’t always take the first fare that is offerd to you, there are plenty of Taxis in Lima so haggle for the best taxi fare.

If you are alone, sit directly behind the driver. This will make it more difficult for him to do anything and give you a chance of a speedy exit in the unlilkely event that things go wrong.

Never take an airport taxi if the driver asks you to share the ride and Never let the driver pick up someone on the way.

Always place your belongings in the trunk and make sure the taxi driver shuts the boot properly. If your luggage is very valuable then keep it on your lap on the rear seat.

You will have no problems with Lima City tours and you will get to see some amazing sites in the city. If you want to look at some of the lesser known tourist attractions then it is often possible to negotiate a daily rate with one of the taxi drivers. A lot of the taxi drivers often double as tour guides and will fill your head with a lot of unkown facts.

Generally speaking Lima and its airport are safe just behave as you would in any major city in the world, be streetwise, hang on to your wallet, don’t flaunt your valuables, stear away from anything that looks like trouble. It normally is !

Its been 16 years since Air France operated a direct route from Paris to Lima. From June the 21st Air France will once again be able to fly you direct. Flights operate every day of the week, except Mondays and Wednesdays, with a Boeing 777-200 providing 309 airline seats

Machu Picchu 100 Year Re-Discovery Celebrations

Peru celebrates 100 years since Hiram Bingham discovered the forgotten citadel of Machu Picchu. Peru’s chamber of tourism hopes the festivities will kick-start a wave of new interest, after flooded rivers closed Machu Picchu for two months last year. The event will begin on July 7, the main day of the hundredth anniversary, and it will last five days. A show is being prepared that will undoubtedly give something to talk about, with a traditional theme where there will be a flight of the condor, lights and more; all this from the highest point of Machu Picchu, in a presentation for 500 people.

The centennial celebration for Machu Picchu is expected to attract $40 million of additional tourism revenue to the Cusco region this month, according to an analysis by Gestión. For full details of all the Machu Picchu celebrations please visit the official site.
